    Etymology: The original confective meaning of εὑρίσκειν makes it probable, that the aorist will be archaic. Beside it was prob. an old perfect, seen in εὕρη-κα. After it came εὑρήσω; the latest member (beside εὑρεθῆναι) was the present εὑρίσκειν (quantity of the ι unknown), which was therefore an innovation. - The aorist εὑρεῖν can be a thematic root formation for *ἐ-Ϝρεῖν, with ἐ- as prothetic (which would mean * h₁w(e)r- ?) or from the ind. *ἔ-Ϝρ-ον (for *ἠ-Ϝρ-ον?); the aspiration secondary after ἑλεῖν a. o.? Or was it a reduplicated aorist *Ϝε-Ϝρεῖν with dissimilatory loss of the anlauting Ϝ- and secondary aspiration. - A reduplicated formation is found also in OIr. preterite -fúar `I found' \< IE *u̯e-u̯r- (pres. fo-gabim); the pass. - frīth `inventum est', which as IE *u̯rē-to- agrees with *Ϝρη- in - Ϝέ-Ϝρη-κα (\> εὕρηκα). V. 1348] and φιαλοῦμεν [Ar. Pax 432] for ( ἐ)πιαλ-) is original, ἱάλλω could belong to ἅλλομαι (Leumann Hom. Wörter 80 n. 45). As however the aspiration can be due to folketymologisal connection with ἵημι, the connection proposed by Kuhn KZ 5, 195f. with Skt. present íy-ar-ti `incite, sets in motion' (cf.     H, h, the eighth letter of the Latin alphabet and the weakest guttural. The sign is borrowed from the Greek, in which H was the old form of the spiritus asper, corresp. to the Latin H-sound (HEKATON, hekaton, ÊOS, hos, etc.). Even some of the ancients doubted whether the Latin H was properly a letter:

    As an initial, it is, in pure Lat. words, followed by no consonant except r: traho, tremo, tribuo, etc.; the combinations tl and tm are found only in words borrowed from the Greek: Tlepolemus, tmesis, Tmolus. Hence an initial t occurring in the ancient language before l (like an initial d before v, v. letter D) is rejected in classical Lat.: lātus (Part. of fero) for tlatus, from root tol- of tollo, tuli; cf. with TLAÔ, tlêtos; even when softened by a sibilant, the combination of t and l in stlata (genus navigii), stlembus (gravis, tardus), stlis, stlocus, was avoided, and, except in the formal lang. of law, which retained stlitibus judicandis, the forms lis, locus remained the only ones in use, though the transitional form slis occurs twice in very old inscriptions. Before a vowel or r, the original Indo-European t always retained its place and character. Between two vowels t and tt were freq. confounded, and in some words the double letter became established, although the original form had but one t; thus, quattuor, cottidie, littera, stand in the best MSS. and inscriptions; v. Corss. Ausspr. 1, 174 sqq.—
    II.
    The sibilant pronunciation of a medial t before i and a following vowel, is a peculiarity of a late period. Isidorus (at the commencement of the seventh century after Christ) is the first who expresses himself definitely on this point: cum justitia sonum z litterae exprimat, tamen quia Latinum est, per t scribendum est, sicut militia, malitia, nequitia et cetera similia (Orig. 1, 26, 28); but the commutation of ci and ti, which occurs not unfrequently in older inscriptions, shows the origin of this change in pronunciation to have been earlier. In the golden age of the language, however, it was certainly [p. 1831] unknown.—
    III.
    The aspiration of t did not come into general use till the golden age; hence, CARTACINIENSIS, on the Columna Rostrata; whereas in Cicero we have Carthago, like Cethegus, etc.; v. Cic. Or. 48, 160; and cf. letter C.—
    IV.
    T is interchanged with d, c, and s; v. these letters.—
    V.
    T is assimilated to s in passus from patior, quassus from quatio, fassus from fateor, missus from mitto, equestris from eques (equit-), etc. It is wholly suppressed before s in usus, from utor; in many nominatives of the third declension ending in s: civitas (root civitat, gen. civitatis), quies (quiet, quietis), lis (lit, litis), dos (dot, dotis), salus (salut, salutis), amans (amant, amantis), mens (ment, mentis), etc.; and likewise in flexi, flexus, from flecto, and before other letters, in remus, cf. ratis; Gr. eretmos; in penna; root pat-, to fly; Gr. petomai, etc. In late Lat. the vulgar language often dropped t before r and before vowels; hence such forms as mari, quaraginta, donaus, are found for matri, quatriginta (quad-), donatus, in inscriptions; cf. the French mère, quarante, donné.—

The sign W is the Aeolic digamma, adopted by the Latins instead of 8, the form used by the Etruscans, Oscans, and Umbrians for this letter; in inscriptions, before A.U.C. 500, it is sometimes written. The ancient grammarians, misled by the shape, ascribed to F the power of the digamma; thus: W Aeolicum digamma, quod apud antiquissimos Latinorum eandem vim quam apud Aeolis habuit, eum autem prope sonum quem nunc habet, significabat p cum aspiratione; sicut etiam apud veteres Graecos pro ph, p, et h, Prisc. 1, 4, p. 12. But it is certain that Lat. F never represents the sound of digamma, and etymologically corresponds to it in but a single root (frango; Gr. rhêgnumi, Curt. Gr. Etym. p. 531; Corss. Ausspr. 1, 397 sq. Initial F in Latin corresponds to an original Indo-European bh, dh, and gh: 1.     Etymology: The barytonesis in ἕως as against ἠώς Wackernagel, Gött. Nachr. 1914, 49ff. (= Kl. Schr. 2, 1151ff.) thinks to explain from frequent ἕωθεν, where it is regular (Schwyzer 383). The aspiration will be due to replacement as in εὕω (Schwyzer 219; after Sommer Lautstud. 11f. however from ἑσπέρα). - PGr. *ἀ̄Ϝώς for *ἀυhώς \< IE *h₂eusṓs and is identical with Lat. aurōr-a (except the added -, cf. flōs: Flōr-a). Witɦ zero grade Skt. uṣā́s f. `dawn' \< *h₂usṓs. A corresponding r-stem, IE * h₂eus-r-, h₂us-r-, is seen in αὔριον (s. v.) with ἄγχ-αυρος `near the morning' (A. R. 4, 111), in Lith. aušr-à `dawn', Skt. usr-á- `of the morning', uṣar-búdh- `waking at dawn'. Of the other cognates be mentioned OCS za ustra `at dawn', Germ., e. g.     Etymology: The different meanings, partly also the variation in form induced many scholars to split ἱερός in two or even in three words. Thus one has because of the long anlaut in ἱ̄ερὸν ἰχθύν Π 407, ἱαρὸς ὄρνις (Alkm. Fr. 26) and ἱερὸς ὄρ. (AP 7, 171), which can be easily explained as metr. lengthening, assumed a special Ϝῑερός `rapid, quick', from where ἱέραξ `hawk' (s. v.). In the meaning `strong, forceful' ἱερός would however be identical with Skt. iṣirá- etwa `strong, active'; here also Celtic river names like Isara (Krahe Beitr. z. Namenforschung 4, 121f.). A third ἱερός, as `holy', would have connections with Italic and Germanic, e. g. Osc. aisusis `sacrifiis', Paelign. aisis, Umbr. erus `dis', OHG ēra ` Ehre'. Thus esp.     Etymology: Both ὀδακ-τάζω, - τίζω and ὀδάξει in H. can be derived from ὀδάξ `with the teeth'. But the earlier and better attested ὀδάξ-ομαι, - άομαι as well as ἀδαχ-εῖ, -ᾳ̃ deviate considerably in meaning. As for the oldest attestations of ὀδάξ (Il.) a meaning `with the teeth' is not directly evident (but it seems possible), Bechtel Lex. wants to render ὀδάξ in these places after ὀδάξομαι with `itching, scratching'; agreeing Wackernagel Unt. 157, WP. 1, 791, Hofmann Et. Wb. The later meaning `with the teeth' would have arisen from a folketymological connection with ὀδών and δάκνω. (The connection suggested by Bechtel (after Fick) with Germ., e.g. Os. bi-tengi `nahe an einen rührend' a.o. is not convincing however; cf. WP. l.c.) -- Whether ὀδάξ, if orig. `biting together, with the teeth' (on cf. λάξ w. lit.), started from ὀδών in connection with δάκνω or, the other way round, from δάκνω in connection with ὀδών, can hardly be decided; cf. beside the lit. in Bq and Bechtel also Güntert Reimwortbildungen 153, Winter Prothet. Vokal 22. Bechtel Lex. and Schwyzer-Debrunner 491 assume a prefix ὀ-, not very convincingly. The forms with ἀ- may rest on vowelassimilation (Schmidt KZ 32, 391 f.); the aspiration in ἀδαχ-ᾳ̃, - εῖ must not be explained as analogical (Schmidt l.c.; rejected by Bechtel). Cf. s.v. ἀδαγμός. So we can conclude that the orig. reading was ἀδαγ-; as the word was less well known, it was at one time replaced by ὀδ-.

As ὀ- can be `prothetic', we can explain the primary yot-present ὀρύσσω from *ὀρυχ-ι̯ω \< * h₃rugh- and compare the nasalinfixed secondary formation Lat. runcō, - āre `weed out, root up', to which a.o. runcō, - ōnis m. `weeding hook', as well as Latv. rūkēt `dig, scrape'; also the primary Skt. luñcati `pluck off' (with l from IE r) can belong here.     Derivatives: Άκαδήμεια a gymnasium in Athens where Plato taught, the Platonic school (Ar.), hεκαδημειας LSJSup.
    Origin: XX [etym. unknown]
    Etymology: Generally identified with the first element in ἑκάεργος (\< *ueḱ-m̥); and with the PN Boeotian Ϝhεκαδαμος, Thess. Ϝεκε-; in Attic this form may have been Έκάδημος D.L., St. Byz; but see Lejeune, Phon. $254 n. 3, who objects that the aspiration was lost. Fur. 309 separates it from these words and connects Άκαδαμίς (Lydian place-name) and Άκταδημος (Carian PN). Cf. Ταρκονδημος(?), Cilicia. But the names in Greece seem to have (had) a w-, of which there is no trace in the Anatolian names. The meaning of - δαμ- is unknown. If the word was Pre-Greek, the sifferent vowels are better understandable (assimilations are rare in Greek).
